Our Paper Straws vs Imported Paper Straws

Our Paper Straws vs Imported Paper Straws

Did you know that most paper straws in the market are imported from China? These imported paper straws may come at a cheaper price, but they are lower quality. To prove this, we put our paper straws to the test against an imported Chinese paper straw. The physical differences are easily recognizable. Ours are a clean white with a .021” wall, and the imported straw is a tan stained color with a 0.017” wall. The behind-the-scenes differences are the ones we are most concerned about. Other than the substitution of one plastic straw, what benefit do you and the planet receive from an imported paper straw purchase? A cheaper price (sometimes)?

Our paper straws are not only competitive in price and premium in quality, they are also:

    • Gluten-free
    • Long lasting
    • Allergen-free
    • Made in the USA
    • Soil biodegradable
    • Seawater biodegradable
    • Help plant trees in US National Parks

We challenge you to ask your current straw supplier what benefits you and the planet receive from buying through them. Chances are that their only benefit is related to price. Here is the good news: you can leave that supplier with confidence knowing that you will be receiving competitive pricing and planting trees with every purchase from us.

Are you still indecisive about the switch? Contact us and we will be more than happy to supply you with a free sample of our paper straws.

The Paper Straw Factory has paper straws available in quantities of 500, 4,000, or 96,000 to meet the needs of many markets including restaurants, food service, hospitals, hotels, and homes throughout the world.

Orders may be placed online here, via email to hello@thepaperstrawfactory.com, or by phone at (864) 438-0862.

    The Family-Owned Difference

    The Family-Owned Difference

What is the family-owned difference? As a customer, it is the feeling of gratitude you get when interacting with a family-owned and -operated company. It is knowing that you’re helping someone just like you fulfill their dreams. As an employee, it is knowing that you work for a company that understands the demands of family and everyday life. It is the appreciation you feel when the owner personally hands you your paycheck every week and says “thank you.” Mainly, the family-owned difference is being seen as a person and not just a number.

The Paper Straw Factory is a family-owned and -operated company, and we plan to keep it that way. That’s why we have already started training the next generation of owners. The video below is of Freddy, the owner’s son. He absolutely loves helping us box and test the “tubos” as he calls them (Spanish for “tube”). He spends many days after school helping, watching, and learning what it takes to run a company. Yes, we understand he is only three years old, but we also know that nobody taught him how to inspect, straighten, and box straws. He learned simply by watching others do it.

    The Paper Straw Factory Difference:

Our owner, Rick Robertson, has made himself available to anyone wanting to speak to him. He is open to any comments, concerns, questions, or complaints via email at rick@thepaperstrawfactory.com or phone at (864) 438-0862. You may also contact our manager, Morgan Reid, via email at hello@thepaperstrawfactory.com or phone at (864) 438-0862.

A Day in the Life of a Paper Straw Manufacturer

A Day in the Life of a Paper Straw Manufacturer

“It can’t be that hard, right? Buy some machines, paper, and glue, and we’ll be good to go.” “Paper straws have to be basically selling themselves right now with all the new regulations.” “We already have a successful manufacturing company, so what could go wrong?”

Before you get ahead of yourself, let me answer that question for you. A lot. A lot could go wrong, a lot has gone wrong, and a lot is yet to go wrong. That’s the nature of business and manufacturing.

Ordering the machines was a hurdle. A hurdle that we thought would be the most difficult. Then we were faced with an even larger one, finding the best paper. After months of testing different paper straw and mill options, we were finally getting all our ducks in a row. Then came the glue. Luckily, or perhaps unluckily, there weren’t many options to choose from. We went with what seemed best and were on our way to production. That is, until we actually tried running the machine.

Even after having an assistant from the machine manufacturer in our facility for a week, we were still at a loss. With so many moving parts, there was no way to learn every possible thing that could go wrong in five short days. And, just to be clear, we didn’t. It took another eight weeks before we were able to run one full production day without any major setbacks. The good news? Our production is now fine-tuned and running like a charm (see our production videos below). The bad news? Well, we can’t sell the darn things!

Single-use plastics, specifically plastic straws, are being outlawed all over the world, yet here we are with over a million straws in stock and nobody willing to buy them. It doesn’t make sense. We know our straws are fantastic quality (see more on our quality here), our prices are at or below market average, and we have pledged all these altruistic efforts to give back to the environment and gain footing in the market. We’ve tried local sales, in-state sales, and nationwide sales, all to no avail. If nothing else, we learned a lot from our hundreds of failed attempts to sell.

The first thing we learned is that we are too early in the market. Many of the plastic straw bans don’t go into effect for another year or so, meaning that many restaurants, hotels, and resorts are stocking up on plastic straws while they can. The second thing we learned is that, as a society, we are extremely resistant to change and demand convenience. There were a handful of businesses that already tried switching to paper straws when they first started coming back around. Customers despised these paper straws, because, let’s be honest, they were terrible. This gave the business an ill-feeling toward paper straws and made them switch back to plastic (booooo!).

All single-use plastic is going to be banned nationwide eventually. Why not get ahead of the game and buy now before all the quality options are booked up?

    Quality Isn't Just a Claim

    Quality Isn't Just a Claim

Who wants to deal with a paper straw that falls apart right away? We don’t, and we can bet that you and your customers don’t either. That makes it hard to trust the cheesy paper straw salespeople who claim to have “quality” and “long-lasting” straws. At some point it goes in one ear and out the other, right? That’s why we set out to PROVE our quality instead of just TELLING it.

The photos above show the end result after our paper straws sat in water from Friday at noon until Monday at noon. One straw started in room temperature water and the other started in cold water. As proven by the photos, both paper straws are still fully intact 72 hours later. Now that’s something to brag about!

Our quality shows not only in our straws, but also in our price. Even with all the altruistic efforts we have pledged to abide by, we were still able to price our paper straws at or below the market average.

If you’re still on the fence about our straws, think about what every purchase from us goes toward. First, it contributes to our fund to plant trees in US National Parks. Second, it supports a company dedicated to maintaining and creating jobs within the United States. Third, it gets you paper straws that are both soil biodegradable and seawater biodegradable. Fourth, it gives our great grandchildren the chance to have a healthy Earth without plastic clogging the grounds and seas. Fifth, it decreases the demand for single-use plastic straws which in turn reduces the supply. Sixth, it gives you the peace of mind knowing that you are getting a truly high-quality paper straw. Seventh, it gives you eternal bragging rights that you supported a small and family-owned company.

We’ll be honest, we aren’t sure why you would ever buy from anyone else.

    Biodegradable Paper Straws

    Biodegradable Paper Straws

The movement to ban single-use plastic is growing exponentially. That is why it’s more important than ever to find sustainable alternatives to everyday products such as straws, utensils, take-out containers, and more. This push led to the reappearance of the formerly prominent paper straw. These simple, yet effective, utensils are taking the world by storm and demanding a presence in all markets.

The Paper Straw Factory spent months testing various straws and papers before settling on a mill. The sustainably harvested paper used to manufacture our paper straws is both soil biodegradable and seawater biodegradable. That means that our paper straws will biodegrade within a few months instead of clogging our grounds and seas throughout our great grandchildren’s lifetimes.

Here are some tips on what to tell family, friends, or customers who don’t support the paper straw movement:

    • Paper straws are much better for the environment. They breakdown within months instead of hundreds of years.
    • Soon we won’t have a choice but to use paper straws. We are getting ahead of the game before the best options are gone.
    • This is a simple and effective way to reduce our footprint.
    • Paper straws require more gentle use than plastic straws. We are all adjusting to this change together.
    • The benefit of these paper straws is that a portion of every purchase goes toward planting trees in US National Parks.
    • Great improvements have been made since paper straws were first introduced back into the market.
    • These paper straws were manufactured right here in the United States so the more straws we buy, the more jobs we create.

The Paper Straw Factory has paper straws available in quantities of 500, 4,000, or 96,000 to meet the needs of many markets including restaurants, food service, hospitals, hotels, and homes throughout the world.

The Rise in Plastic Straw Alternatives

The Rise in Plastic Straw Alternatives

There is exciting progress in the world of straws, offering restaurants, retailers, and families eco-friendly plastic straw alternatives. As a paper straw manufacturer, we are happy to be blazing the way in making our oceans and our world healthier for all.

    Paper Drinking Straws

Don’t let the word “paper” fool you, as paper straws are made from a thick paper that won’t get soggy when sipping your beverage. Choose from standard or jumbo depending on your needs. When done you can recycle, compost, or even throw your straw in the trash with the assurance that, unlike plastic, it will biodegrade.

    Reusable Straws

The options in reusable straws are many with stainless steel, glass, bamboo, and silicone being top picks. Keep in mind that glass can chip and stainless steel can hurt if you accidentally bite your straw—which you may be surprised is a habit you have formed. Also, bamboo can brown if not cared for properly. Silicone is the most popular reusable option for at home but can be challenging to travel with as they need to be washed after use—so pack a few paper straws with you instead.

    Other Non-Plastic Straws

Straws are also being made from alternatives like cookies, pasta, hay, or wheat. Even if you don’t eat them, you can toss them without the same concerns you would have with plastic. Also, many restaurants are turning to PLA straws which look and feel like plastic but are made from starch, sugar cane, and cassava roots—making them biodegradable. However, PLA straws can take 6 months or more to biodegrade. This means PLA is better for the environment than plastic, but may have the same concerns if they end up in the ocean.

As you can see, you have several plastic straw alternatives to choose from. If you are looking for a quality paper straw manufacturer, browse The Paper Straw Factory today!
