4 Tips For a Greener Summer Cookout

4 Tips For a Greener Summer Cookout

Grilling and group barbeques are one of the joys of summer. They get you and your loved ones unplugged and outside in the fresh air. To ensure a greener summer cookout, consider the tips below.

    Shop your local farmer’s markets

Firstly, buy as much of the meat and produce you plan to grill from your local farmer’s market. Not only will your food be farm fresh, but since it’s from local farms, it will have a lower carbon footprint than store-bought alternatives.

    Switch to green disposables

Eating outdoors is always easier with disposable products, but it’s time to green your disposables. Switch to plates, cups, and utensils made from recycled materials that are either recyclable or biodegradable. You can even swap out your plastic straws for disposable paper straws that work just as well, without the risk of harming our beloved sea creatures or environment.

    Be leftover ready

If you bought too much and have some left over, don’t let them go to waste. Be prepared with plenty of foil so that you can wrap the grilled extras to send home with guests. If items, like hamburger buns, can be frozen, pop them in the freezer ASAP. Use mason jars, and other reusable containers to send home extra potato salad and beverages. Last but not least, be sure to eat what is leftover—as an average of 40 percent of leftovers end up in the trash.

    Buy in bulk

Whether it’s chips, beverages, or condiments, buy as much as you can in bulk, with the goal of utilizing as few single-use items as possible. Head to big box stores like Costco or Sam’s Club to stock up.

    Help your guests recycle

Last but certainly not least, make recycling easy for your guests by clearly labeling trash bins for glass bottles, single-use plastic and disposable paper straws, plates, and more!
